Germiston – April is dubbed Chris Hani Month in the City of Ekurhuleni, a period of the year that is dedicated to commemorating the life and times of this liberation struggle icon.
It has been 32 years since the death of Hani, who is a free person of Ekurhuleni, after he was assassinated outside his home in Dawn Park, Boksburg. As such, the city annually lines up activities to honour Hani.
This year, an exhilarating musical theatre production has been put together depicting the life of Hani leading to his untimely death on April 10, 1993.
The production is curated by local artists based at the Dumisani Masilela Theatre in Germiston.

“Ekurhuleni is very fortunate and blessed to have been home to liberators of Hani’s stature.
“As a city, we have made it our business to remind locals and the rest of the country about the sacrifices of liberation icons who brought us the freedom we enjoy today,” said city spokesman Zweli Dlamini, appealing to members of the public to come in numbers to the artistic showpiece.
The production takes place from May 15 to 17 at 15:00 daily in the Dumisani Smart Theatre.
Admission is free.
“We must also appreciate the talent behind this show and emphasise the importance for locals to support them so that they can continue to produce more excellent productions,” says Dlamini.
