Accidents at Méouane: the mayor announces a complaint against the mining company GCO

On the occasion of a forum organised last Saturday in Méouane on the impact of mining activities in the area, the mayor of the commune, Cheikh Sall, took the floor to denounce the recrudescence of fatal accidents linked to trains of the mining company Grande Côte Operations (GCO). He particularly evoked the recent tragedy in the village of Ndoukoureu, where a woman tragically lost her life. Very angry with the company, the mayor announced the official support of the city hall to the families of the victims in their legal proceedings against GCO. According to him, these accidents are only the visible part of a set of injuries suffered by the local populations: environmental degradation, damage to agriculture and livestock, and above all lack of social responsibility of the enterprise. “So far, the family of the last victim has received no support from GCO. The children of the deceased even had to drop out of school. This is unacceptable”, a deplored Cheikh Sall.. In response to these accusations, the GCO communication service was obliged to provide clarifications in a communiqué.
