After Colobane and Guédiawaye, Keur Massar lives the hour of the grand déguerpissement

The depopulation operations initiated by the Direction Générale du Cadre de Vie et de l’Hygiène Publique (DGCVHP), in collaboration with the local administrative authorities, continued this weekend in the department of Keur Massar. This intervention follows the recent operations carried out in Colobane and Guédiawaye on the instructions of the Minister of the Interior. The objective stated by the authorities is to free the undertakings illegally occupied by commercial or artisanal installations, which impede the circulation and pose serious safety problems to road users. According to DGCVHP officials, the liberation of public roads aims to restore fluidity in a context marked by strong demographic pressure and accelerated urbanization. On the ground, the DGCVHP teams, supported by the forces of order, demolished several barracks and stalls installed on the sidewalks and sidewalks. While some inhabitants and motorists welcome a measure which they consider necessary to unclog the arteries, other traders affected by these operations express their dismay at the loss of their main means of subsistence. The local authorities, aware of the social impact of these displacements, assure that they will work to find accompanying solutions, notably through the orientation of the actors affected towards places of reintegration. This new stage in the vast programme of decongestion is part of the public authorities’ desire to strengthen urban order, but it also recalls the need for an inclusive dialogue between the State, local authorities and the population in order to reconcile the imperatives of security, fluidity of circulation and the economic survival of small businesses.
