Senate President Godswill Akpabio has announced that three senatorial seats in the 10th Senate are now vacant following the deaths of their respective members.
Speaking during Tuesday’s plenary, Akpabio explained that the vacancies arose due to the demise of lawmakers representing the affected districts.
He said the declaration aligns with the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended).
“Due to the tragedies that have befallen the 10th Senate, vacancies have been created for midterm elections by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to fill the seats left vacant by our colleagues,” he said.
Akpabio specifically declared vacant the following senatorial seats:
Enugu North Senatorial District, Enugu State
Nasarawa North Senatorial District, Nasarawa State
Rivers South-East Senatorial District, Rivers State
He added that INEC is mandated to conduct fresh elections to fill these seats within the timeframe specified by the Constitution, which is approximately 30 days from this declaration.
