Akwa Ibom CJ tasks journalists on professionalism, protection of human rights 

Chief Judge of Akwa Ibom State, Justice Ekaete Fabian-Obot, has urged journalists to uphold professionalism in the discharge of their duties and ensure that human dignity and rights are respected as well.

She harped on the need to verify facts, hear all sides to a story, and exercise patience when challenges arise in reaching concerned parties.

Speaking on Monday during a courtesy call at her chambers by the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Akwa Ibom State Council, Justice Obot urged Journalists not to allow themselves be compromised, stressing that they remain the image and conscience of society.

The Chief Judge, while warning against defamatory reports said such a phenomenon has the potential to erode confidence, damage reputations and undermine public trust.

Her words, “I am delighted to receive this delegation today. I encourage you to remain true to the teachings and etiquettes of your profession, because professionalism is the hallmark of an excellent practitioner.

“The dignity of an individual must never be compromised or traded for any reason, regardless of the circumstances.”

Earlier in his address, the NUJ State Chairman, Nsibiet John, extolled the Chief Judge’s motherly virtues since assuming office, describing her tenure as impactful and reform-driven. He commended her contributions to the judiciary, particularly in the areas of infrastructural development, speedy dispensation of justice, improved decency within the judicial system, and enhanced welfare for workers in the third arm of government.

The chairman further sought improved synergy and partnership between the judiciary and the media through regular engagements, noting that such collaboration would help foster a more progressive society.

He also appealed to the Chief Judge to consider capacity-building initiatives for journalists who specialize in judiciary and crime reporting.
