Benue State Governor, Fr Hyacinth Iormem Alia, on Tuesday, formally launched the distribution of Spiro electric motorcycles at the Rural Access and Agricultural Marketing Project (RAAMP) headquarters in Makurdi, announcing an extra two percent price reduction for beneficiaries.
The programme, implemented through the Benue State RAAMP under Governor Alia’s leadership, is designed to introduce cost-effective and environmentally friendly transport options for residents of the state.
According to the government, the procurement of the Spiro electric bikes is aimed at lowering fuel expenses, minimizing carbon emissions, and encouraging sustainable transportation.
To support seamless usage, battery charging and swap stations have already been installed at key points across the state, while the bikes are being sold at subsidised prices to ensure they remain affordable.
Governor Alia explained that the initiative aligns with his administration’s broader youth empowerment agenda, stressing that collaboration with relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) is focused on opening up opportunities that will help young people take charge of their future and contribute productively to society.
He further noted that the electric bikes are far more economical to run compared to petrol-powered motorcycles, adding that the battery swap technology represents a significant milestone in Benue’s drive toward green transportation.
The governor was welcomed at the venue by the State Coordinator of RAAMP, Steven Numbeve, alongside the Commissioner for Agriculture, Benjamin Ashaver. During the visit, Governor Alia praised Numbeve for his innovative approach and dedication to development.
He also cautioned against any attempt to steal the bikes, revealing that they are fitted with tracking technology.
“These bikes have trackers. Going forward, nobody is going to steal any bike in Benue State,” he warned.
The state government disclosed that the distribution will be carried out in phases, with the number of beneficiaries expected to increase as the programme expands.
