The Regroupement des Boulangers du Sénégal (REBS) has officially deposited a préavis d’arrêt de production pour les 18 et 19 mars 2025, marking an escalation in their struggle for more favorable working and economic conditions. In a communiqué addressed to the Prime Minister of Senegal, the Minister of Commerce and Industry, as well as to all boulangers and the Senegalese population, the REBS denounces the non-respect of the commitments made by the authorities. Despite numerous approaches and repeated requests for an audience, the boulangers claim to have received no concrete answers. “The economic situation of many bakeries is alarming, some being already in bankruptcy and others facing insurmountable difficulties”, can be read in the document. This action, qualified as renewable, will remain in force “until our legitimate claims are satisfied”, the communiqué states. The REBS calls on the highest authorities of the country, notably the Prime Minister and the Minister of Commerce and Industry, to open urgent negotiations to meet the concerns of the bakers. This strike could have significant repercussions on the supply of bread in the context of Ramadan.
