Angry Youth Burn Police Station, Free Detainees After Inmate Dies In Custody

After a young man’s death in a police cell sparked outrage among the inhabitants of Ghana’s Ashanti Region, the city of Ejura descended into chaos on January 11, 2025. The gentleman, arrested for reportedly purchasing a stolen telephone, apparently died while in prison.

Authorities moved his body to the graveyard without telling his home, causing a furor among the neighborhood’s youth, which precipitated a bloody uprising. The enraged group reportedly attacked the Ejura police station, igniting it along with local homes and other cars. Additionally, they detained all of the prisoners and entered the cell.

The youth threw stones at the officers, who responded by firing shots, which only made things worse. Ghana Armed Forces were called in to ease tension, but the harm had already been done.
