Sixteen athletes from the Kwa-Thema Disabled Sports Club participated in the Athletics Gauteng North trials at Pilditch Stadium in Pretoria. Seven of them qualified to represent Gauteng in a national competition to be held in Gqeberha.
“They did so well and I am always proud of them.
“Taking part in competitions helps them to grow and desire to achieve more,” explained the club’s founder and coach, Aubrey Mathibela.
The athletes will be joined by three soccer players who qualified in a previous engagement. Paralympian Collen Mahlalela will try out for the Grand Slam Track and Commonwealth Games in Stellenbosch this week.
The athlete has been training with Kwa-Thema Disability Sports Club since 2021. Mahlalela is originally from Masibekela in Mpumalanga.
Mathibela encouraged parents who have children living with disabilities to allow them to join the club. They train week days at the Kwa-Thema Stadium.
