Nasarawa: Governor Sule urges legal action to curb corruption in teaching appointments

Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule has called on applicants to take legal action against any official of the state Teachers’ Service Commission, TSC, who allegedly collected bribes in exchange for teaching appointments.. Speaking on Tuesday, Governor Sule expressed dismay over reports that some individuals paid money for teaching positions and accused TSC officials of contributing to inefficiencies in the state’s education system.. “This is the most terrible thing I have heard,” the governor said. “If anybody has collected their money or anything, they can take them to court.. “I don’t think this is good. I don’t think this is fair. It is unfair to me, as my name is being scandalised for something I have no knowledge of,” Sule stated.. The governor noted that despite an approved recruitment of 1,000 teachers, many rural schools remain understaffed, with some having only two or three teachers.. He attributed part of the issue to teachers preferring to stay in urban areas rather than being posted to villages.. DAILY POST recalls that in response to the allegations, Governor Sule had announced the suspension of the entire TSC and the formation of a three-member investigative committee to uncover the truth.. “We have no other choice than to suspend the entire TSC and put up a committee to investigate them. They will remain suspended until we get the true situation of things,” Sule stated.

Food queue stampedes happened in US, not exclusive to Nigeria – Minister

The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Nentawe Yilwatda, said food queue stampedes are not limited to Nigeria, stressing that they have also happened in advanced parts of the world like the United States.. This is as he blamed poor organisation for the food queue stampedes that recently happened in parts of Nigeria during the 2024 Yuletide season.. Yilwatda stated this on Tuesday when he appeared as a guest on Channels Television’s 2024 Year-End Review.. “Stampedes have taken place in more developed countries than Nigeria.. “If you recall Hurricane Katrina in the US when they had food distribution because of poor organisation, they had stampede.. “Also, in the school food distribution in Texas, in the US, the same thing happened. It has happened in several countries that are more developed than Nigeria, where you have poor organisation,” the minister said.. DAILY POST recalls that three major food queue stampedes were recorded in Oyo, Anambra and Nigeria’s capital city Abuja, respectively, where no fewer than 70 lives were lost.. Many blamed the unfortunate incidents on hunger and the high cost of food, while the private organisers of the food distribution programmes have been detained by the police.. According to the minister, the Federal Government is the biggest distributor of relief materials to the poorest of the poor in Nigeria.. He added that the government distributes relief materials more than private individuals yet no stampede has been experienced in government programmes.. Yilwatda urged private persons willing to donate relief items to Nigerians to get the proper organisation right and seek the ministry’s help.

Taliban deploys troops to Afghanistan-Pakistan border amid deadly strikes

Tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan have escalated significantly, raising concerns of a potential full-scale war as the Taliban has deployed troops to the border in response to lethal strikes and increasing aggressiveness. The Afghan Taliban has taken responsibility for severe artillery assaults on Pakistani military sites along the disputed Durand Line, worsening an already critical situation. Taliban representatives stated that several Pakistani checkpoints were destroyed and that groups of fighters have been organized in anticipation of possible retaliation from Islamabad. These attacks are viewed as a response to recent Pakistani airstrikes on Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) positions in eastern Afghanistan, which reportedly resulted in the deaths of 46 civilians, including women and children, leading to vows of revenge from the Taliban. The Taliban-led Afghan government has accused Pakistan of infringing on Afghan sovereignty, with a senior Taliban official asserting, “We didn’t expel NATO just to be intimidated or humiliated by Punjabis.” The Taliban’s Ministry of Defence has put troops on high alert and strengthened border positions, indicating preparation for a drawn-out conflict. Taliban foreign minister Amir Khan Muttaqi warned Pakistan, saying, “We will not forget Pakistan’s aggression on Afghan territory today.” Despite Islamabad’s nuclear capabilities, Taliban officials maintained firm confidence in their ability to handle any escalation, with one senior leader stating, “We believe and know that God is on our side.” Pakistan is currently confronted with an increasing threat from both the Afghan Taliban and the TTP, a militant group strengthened by the Taliban’s resurgence in 2021. The TTP, reportedly equipped with weapons taken from withdrawing U.S. troops, has escalated its attacks within Pakistan, making the security situation more complex for Islamabad. Previously, Pakistan backed the Afghan Taliban during the U.S.-led war in Afghanistan with the aim of gaining strategic influence. The Taliban’s ascent to power has had adverse effects, intensifying Pakistan’s internal insurgency. The growing crisis has attracted global attention, prompting Russia to call for restraint from both parties. Worries are growing about possible regional instability as tensions between the two neighboring countries keep rising. With Taliban forces positioning themselves along the border and Pakistan blaming Kabul for sheltering militants, the situation is delicate, and both parties are preparing for more clashes.

Nasarawa: Governor Sule alerts about New Year cash grant fraud

Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State has warned the public about a scam that falsely claims to provide a N50,000 New Year cash grant to Nigerians. He characterized the scheme as deceitful and urged people not to interact with the fraudulent link. A statement from the governor’s social media aide, Godwin Rimi, shared with the press, cautioned citizens against clicking on any links or responding to questions to obtain the so-called grant. “It is a scam,” he stated. “Rimi said not to click on the link.” “There is no link at all between His Excellency, the Governor, or the Government of Nasarawa State and this program.” The statement also advised Nigerians to delete such messages and avoid sharing them to ensure their safety and that of others. The governor emphasized the need for alertness, especially since scammers frequently take advantage of the holiday season to prey on unaware people. This warning comes after similar notices from officials in other states, as cybercriminals consistently find new ways to scam the public.

  • FCT: Minister discloses penalties for individuals who do not pay certificate of occupancy fee

FCT: Minister discloses penalties for individuals who do not pay certificate of occupancy fee

Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has announced that the deadline for land allottees to pay their Certificate of Occupancy fees will not be extended. He emphasized the importance of fulfilling these obligations, noting that once the grace period ends, the lands will be reassigned to interested parties. Wike made this statement during a regular inspection of various major infrastructure projects in the FCT, which included the 15-kilometre left service lane of the Outer Southern Expressway, the Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal complex in Dakibiyu, and the 5-kilometre Saburi Road. Speaking to reporters afterward, Wike addressed concerns regarding the listing of plot owners who have not yet paid their fees, explaining that the list comes from existing records and that those with proof of payment will be handled appropriately. He reiterated that the grace period would remain unchanged and highlighted the necessity of compliance to support revenue generation for the development of the FCT, noting that some land allocations have been pending for up to 10 years. He stated, “We believe it is essential for individuals to fulfill their obligations.” Once the grace period ends, these lands will be redistributed to those who are interested. When questioned about distractions and their potential impact on his progress in the FCT in 2025, the Minister emphasized that he is not distracted and remains fully committed to fulfilling his responsibilities in the FCT. He noted that complaints are a normal aspect of governance and that it’s impractical to expect to please everyone. “These complaints will not hinder us from our objective.” “We are dedicated to meeting our obligations and attaining the best results for the majority of our residents,” he stated. “Our emphasis is on doing what is right and achieving the best possible outcomes for most of our residents, rather than catering to a select few.”
