Following Governor Bala Mohammed’s imminent defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), stakeholders of the party in Bauchi State have commenced fresh consultations to determine their next political direction, amid moves by the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to woo the governor.
The decision was reached on Saturday during a closed-door stakeholders’ meeting held at the Government House banquet hall in Bauchi, a development that has further heightened uncertainty among party supporters.
Briefing journalists after the meeting, the State Chairman of the PDP, Samaila Adamu Burga, said no decision had been taken but acknowledged what he described as a “thin possibility” of aligning with other political platforms.
According to him, several political parties have already approached the Bauchi PDP, seeking that Governor Bala Mohammed and his supporters join their fold.
Burga explained that the newly constituted committee has been mandated to interface with all interested political parties and assess their conditions before recommending a preferred option.
He noted that the committee would engage widely with stakeholders within and outside the state to ensure an inclusive decision-making process.
The PDP chairman stated that the move became necessary in view of the current challenges facing the party but maintained that the PDP remains strong, with widespread support across the state.
The committee is chaired by the Deputy Governor Auwal Mohammed Jatau and comprises top party officials, elected representatives, commissioners, and other stakeholders.
Other members include the Deputy National Chairman of the Turaki-led PDP, Hamza Koshe Akuyam; former Deputy Governor Baba Tela; Senator Bala Kariya; Speaker of the Bauchi State House of Assembly, Rt Hon. Abubakar Y. Suleiman; Hajiya Amina Mohammed Katagum; PDP Chairman Samaila Adamu Burga; and Garba Mohammed Noma. The Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Aminu Hammayo, will serve as secretary of the committee.
Burga added that consultations would continue, after which stakeholders would reconvene to determine the party’s next political direction.
He expressed confidence that a final decision would be reached within the next week, noting that all actions remain within the provisions of the electoral law and the Independent National Electoral Commission timetable for the 2027 general elections.
