The six officers of the Pikine police station, involved in a police robbery case which led to the death of Mohamed Diop, alias Mohamed Taya, appeared this Tuesday before the tribunal de grande instance. The procureur de la République has requested a seven-year prison sentence against them. The final decision will be rendered on 11 February 2025. Mohamed Diop Taya had been arrested on 19 March 2024 by these agents. According to the testimonies and elements of the dossier, he would have been taken to Technopole, where he would have suffered serious acts of violence. Noting the severity of his injuries, the police transported him urgently to the Centre de Santé Dominique, before he was transferred to the Hôpital Principal de Dakar. Unfortunately, despite the care, Mohamed Taya died in the night of 24 to 25 March 2024 The death of Mohamed Taya provoked a shock wave, leading to demonstrations in Pikine and in other quarters of Dakar. These protest movements denounced the abuse of power and police violence, reviving the debate on the disproportionate use of force by the forces of order in Senegal.
