Bekkersdal – At least nine people have been fatally shot by gunmen at KwaNoxolo tavern, in the Tambo section of Bekkersdal.
Witnesses told the police that they saw a white minibus taxi with about 12 people inside and others in a silver sedan, a Toyota Etios.
Some of the armed men alighted and open fire on patrons just before 01:00.
The assailants also searched patrons and stole their cellphones and other valuables.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Athlande Mathe said 10 others were wounded in the random shooting in the early hours of Sunday, 21 December 2025.
“Some victims were randomly shot in the streets by unknown gunmen,” Brigadier Mathe said.
Gauteng Commissioner Major General Kekana is on the scene.
No arrests have been made yet.
The motive of the shooting has not been established.
However, Gauteng SA Police Service’s Serious and Violent Crime Investigations, together withthe Crime Detection Tracing Unit, have launched a manhunt for the suspects involved in the shooting
