The Benue State House of Assembly on Tuesday passed the State Revenue Service Consolidation and Harmonised Law.
The law was passed during a plenary presided over by the Speaker, Rt Hon. Alfred Emberga.
The passage of the law follows the recent public hearing on the proposed revenue service bill, where stakeholders drawn from different areas of human endeavour attended and made their positions on the bill known.
According to a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker, Michael Upaa, the new law will improve revenue collection and government spending, as well as ensure that funds are directed to projects that benefit citizens such as hospitals, schools and public infrastructure.
Chairman of the House Standing Committee on Finance, Hon. Mathew Damkor, explained that the new law seeks to address longstanding challenges associated with multiple taxation, overlapping tax authorities and ambiguity in tax obligations. Members unanimously passed the law.
Also during plenary, two bills received a second reading on the floor of the House. They are the Benue State Agency for International Cooperation and Development Bill and the Road Traffic Management and Vehicle Inspection Bill.
The bills are sponsored by Hon. Douglas Akya, representing Makurdi South State Constituency, and the Majority Leader, Hon. Thomas Dugeri, representing Kwande West State Constituency, respectively.
A bill for a law to provide for the establishment of the Benue State Security Trust Fund and for other matters connected therewith was also read for the first time on the floor of the House. The bill is sponsored by Hon. Sir Thomas Terzungwe Dugeri, representing Kwande West State Constituency.
