The Benue State Government has taken decisive action to address issues at the slaughterhouse along Awe Street, Makurdi, the state capital, following concerns raised by members of the public.
Governor Hyacinth Alia has directed the Benue State Urban Development Board (BSUDB) to take immediate action.
Heads of departments from the board visited the site for an on-the-spot assessment.
“All required heavy-duty machines are being put in place, and work is set to commence tomorrow, January 19, 2026,” an official confirmed.
Residents and business operators in the area have been advised to remove illegal structures ahead of the planned demolition or face enforced clearance.
Officials hinted that the cleared area could host commercial developments, including a shopping mall, marking a new phase of urban renewal for Awe Street.
Governor Alia, the Benue State Urban Development Board, the State Police Command, and the wider Benue State Government were commended for their prompt intervention.
Recall that the police recently arrested 41 persons in the area in connection with activities at the slaughterhouse.
