
Benue State Police Command has confirmed the death of a passenger after suspected armed bandits opened fire on a commercial bus in Ohimini Local Government Area of the state during the early hours of Thursday.
A police source disclosed that the attack happened around 2:00 a.m. on February 5 in Ojali community, Ohimini LGA.
The vehicle involved, an 18-seater Hummer Bus bearing registration number GME 911 XE (Gombe), was said to be transporting passengers from Akwa Ibom State to Gombe State when it was ambushed.
“The vehicle was driven by one Musa Jibrin. On reaching Ojali, unknown gunmen opened fire from the bush on the moving bus. One passenger, identified as Sanusi Danmaji, 30, was shot and killed,” the source said.
The source further confirmed that none of the passengers was taken away by the attackers.
In response, the Divisional Police Officer in Ohimini immediately deployed patrol teams and other tactical operatives to the area.
Security personnel documented the scene with photographs and carried out a thorough search of nearby bushes in an effort to trace and apprehend the assailants.
After security clearance, the driver and other passengers were allowed to proceed on their journey.
The police command stated that the matter has been handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for detailed investigation.
Police authorities have also advised travellers to stay alert and promptly report any suspicious activity to the closest security agency.
