BREAKING: NRC Managing Director, Opeifa, has yielded to pressure and issued an apology to Nigerian journalists.

Kayode Opeifa, the Managing Director of the Nigeria Railway Corporation, has expressed regret to the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory Chapter, for physically assaulting a member and Ladi Bala, a staff member of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA). He issued his apology during a press conference held at the NUJ FCT secretariat in Abuja on Sunday. This apology followed a condemnation from the NUJ FCT regarding the inappropriate treatment of its members while they reported on the recent train derailment between Abuja and Kaduna, leading to their demand for a public apology from Opeifa. In his statement, Opeifa acknowledged that he was overwhelmed in that moment and expressed his sorrow for the unfortunate comments he made, which negatively impacted both the seasoned journalist and the NUJ FCT as well as the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ). He admitted to making unkind statements in an effort to prioritize safety. “I accept complete responsibility for this and I sincerely apologize.” Grace Ike, the Chairman of NUJ FCT, urged journalists to remain calm following the incident. Remember, six passengers were hurt when the Abuja-Kaduna train derailed in Jere on Tuesday.
