Burkina Faso military junta dissolves political partiesĀ

Burkina Faso’s military-led government has officially dissolved all political parties and annulled the legal framework regulating their activities, according to a decree approved by the country’s council of ministers on Thursday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the move comes nearly 16 months after the military seized power in September 2022, marking the latest step in efforts to consolidate control following the suspension of political activity after the coup.

Interior Minister Emile Zerbo described the action as part of a broader initiative to ā€œrebuild the state,ā€ citing widespread abuses and systemic dysfunction within Burkina Faso’s multiparty system.

A government review reportedly concluded that the proliferation of political parties had deepened divisions and weakened social cohesion.

Prior to the coup, Burkina Faso had over 100 registered political parties, 15 of which held seats in parliament following the 2020 general election.

Under the new decree, all political parties and formations are formally disbanded.

A law repealing the statutes governing political parties, party financing, and the role of opposition leaders will be submitted to the transitional council, according to cabinet meeting records.

Additionally, all assets belonging to the dissolved parties will be transferred to the state.

Burkina Faso, like its Sahel neighbors Mali and Niger, has been grappling with deadly Islamist insurgencies linked to al Qaeda and Islamic State.

These conflicts have killed thousands and displaced millions over the past decade.
