Craig Burley, a former Chelsea player, thinks Portugal will face challenges in making a significant mark at the 2026 World Cup if Cristiano Ronaldo remains at the helm. While acknowledging Ronaldo’s impact as captain and his impressive goal tally for Portugal, Burley expressed in a conversation with ESPN that the Al Nassr player should primarily come off the bench. “It’s astonishing that he is still active at this age.” Can a 41 and a half year old player take the lead for one of the most skilled teams in the 2026 World Cup? While it might be possible to keep him on the bench, this would create pressure on the coach to explain why Ronaldo isn’t in the game.” In my opinion, Roberto Martinez is being shortsighted by continuing to choose him. Sure, he scores occasionally, but there’s substantial evidence from the last two instances that supports my view. In significant competitions, he was either benched or faced difficulties.
