Johannesburg ā The Electoral Commission (IEC) has announced the results of the by-elections held on Wednesday, 21 January 2026, in Gauteng and the Western Cape.
In a statement made available to The Bulrushes on Thursday, 22 January 2026, the IEC said the Democratic Alliance (DA) retained its seat in Gauteng while the Patriotic Alliance (PA) won seats in the Western Cape.
Gauteng
The new DA Councillor is Johannes Lodewicus Page in ward 57 in the City of Tshwane municipality, TSH.
The party retained the seat it won in the 2021 Municipal Elections, with 53.20% of the total votes cast, compared to 59.01% in the 2021 Municipal Elections.
Voter turnout was 21.04%.
Western Cape
The new PA Councillor is Raphael John Goeieman in ward 17 in the George Municipality, WC044.
The party won the seat with 59.98 % of the total votes cast.
The seat was previously held by the DA in the 2021 Municipal Elections, in which they attained 39.86% total votes.
Voter turnout was 54.07%.
The new PA Councillor is Marchell Elton Frederick Kleynhans in ward 27 in the George Municipality, WC044.
The party won the seat previously held by the Good party in the 2021 Municipal Elections with 51.35% of the total votes cast. Voter turnout was 55.08%.
