BYM raises alarm over alleged death threats on its president

The Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM) has raised the alarm over alleged death threats on its National President, Barr. Dalyop Solomon Mwantiri, following what they described as his consistent, courageous and principled advocacy on the worsening security situation in Plateau State.

The National Publicity Secretary of the BYM, Rwang Tengwong, who made the allegations in a statement on Saturday, February 28, 2026, said the group had received highly disturbing and credible intelligence reports indicating an imminent threat to Mwantiri’s life due to his outspoken stance against killings and insecurity affecting indigenous communities and violence perpetrated by suspected Fulani bandits and terrorists in the state.

According to Tengwong, the intelligence reports also uncovered clandestine moves by armed Fulani militants to eliminate the youth leader by allegedly placing a bounty on his head and engaging local collaborators.

The statement stressed that the threats were connected to Mwantiri’s stance and sustained public engagements by exposing the “persistent attacks, armed invasions and the land-grabbing agenda being carried out by violent armed groups and terrorist Fulani militants, whose activities have led to the tragic loss of over 3,000 Berom lives, mostly women and children, and have created severe humanitarian crises across several Plateau communities.”

“Available intelligence reveals that these criminal elements, angered by his fearless advocacy, have allegedly placed a huge bounty on his head and are actively perfecting dangerous plots to track his movements and cause him harm,” Tegwong said in the statement.

He added that the thickening plot as revealed by the intelligence report, involves surveillance, trailing, infiltration using local collaborators, and other covert strategies intended to inflict physical or psychological harm, possibly in ways that may appear accidental or natural.

“These revelations have exposed the alarming depth of desperation of these violent groups, whose primary objective is to silence voices that speak the truth, demand justice, and challenge the prevailing culture of silence and selective justice surrounding the insecurity in the region.

“BYM views this development as a direct threat not only to the life of our President, but also to freedom of speech, civic engagement, peace advocacy, and community leadership in Plateau State.

“Should anything happen to the President of BYM as a result of these threats or any act connected thereto, the Association cannot guarantee the outcome, as the consequences could be far-reaching and devastating,” he emphasized.

While condemning the alleged threat, Tengwong warned that if any harm were to come to Mwantiri in the course of his advocacy for his people, it would constitute a grave assault on democracy, peace, justice, and the collective conscience of Nigerians.

He, however, called on the police, the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigerian Army, Operation Enduring Peace, and other relevant security agencies to immediately provide adequate security protection for the BYM President and swiftly commence thorough investigations into the threats.
