  • Nigeria’s Accountant-General promises to address the revenue deficit and increase remittances.

The Accountant General of the Federation (AGF) has promised to address Nigeria’s revenue shortfalls by implementing strong revenue initiatives. A statement from OAGF spokesperson Bawa Mokwa on Thursday indicated that Mrs. Oluwatoyin Madein made this commitment while meeting with the House of Representatives Committee on Public Account in Abuja. She noted that the new revenue initiatives have led to better funding for personnel costs, operational expenses, and capital for 2024. However, she recognized the issue of low revenue contributions from some government-owned enterprises. Madein also mentioned that since taking office in May 2023, the FGN Consolidated Financial Statement has been prepared and audited through December 31, 2019, in collaboration with the Office of the Auditor-General of the Federation. “We have completed and reviewed the audits for 2020 and 2021, and we are currently working on 2022,” she stated. The AGF mentioned that the OAGF has suggested several improvements to GIFMIS and IPPIS that will be stronger with the collaboration of the National Assembly. In reply, Bamidele Salam, the Chairman of the House Committee on Public Accounts, urged the AGF to submit the 2022 Consolidated Financial Statement of the Federation as mandated by the 1999 Constitution. Regarding the issue of low revenue remittances from state-owned enterprises, he recommended implementing thorough measures to prevent revenue losses through automation and regular audits.

“He’s imaginative” – Tuchel advised the player to be the foundation of the England squad.

Former England winger Chris Waddle has called on manager Thomas Tuchel to center his team around Chelsea’s Cole Palmer. Waddle remarked that it would be “foolish” for Tuchel not to make Palmer the main focus of his revamped England squad, considering the midfielder’s impressive performances since departing Manchester City. Tuchel took over as Gareth Southgate’s full-time successor last October and started his role in January. “Cole Palmer always stands out,” the ex-Tottenham Hotspur star told Prime Casino. “He’s an excellent creative player.” Many overlook that the creative aspect of the game is the most challenging part of football. “In my opinion, Cole Palmer has performed exceptionally well for Chelsea.” He has great talent and scores goals. “I believe that if Thomas Tuchel doesn’t create a team that supports him — some may argue we have Bellingham — not building a team around Cole Palmer would be foolish. “I think he is our best option if we want to compete for a tournament.”

Governor Fintiri also praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for creating the Ministry of Livestock Development and appointing Maiha as minister, expressing hope that this new ministry will rejuvenate the sector. “Establishing a Ministry of Livestock Development is a positive move.” Under Alhaji Idi Mukhtar Maiha’s leadership, I am confident that the sector will achieve new levels of success,” he remarked. In reply, Minister Maiha praised Adamawa State’s initiatives to enhance the livestock industry, particularly the development of a northern international cattle market in Mubi. “Adamawa State is fortunate to have abundant animal resources and more than 33 grazing reserves.” The minister praised the governor’s plan to create a top-tier cattle market in Mubi, noting that it will make the state a leader in livestock commerce.

Police confirm that the Enugu government account was not hacked.

The Nigeria Police Force has stated that the Enugu State Government’s account was not hacked, contrary to claims circulating on social media. The Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, made this announcement in a statement on Friday in Abuja. “The Nigeria Police Force rejects the unfounded claim of an alleged hack of the Enugu State Government’s official account, which supposedly resulted in the theft of N1.09 billion. This claim is completely baseless, as the matter was investigated by the NPF National Cyber Crime Centre (NCCC). It was a case of procurement fraud, not a cyber breach; a suspect has been arrested, and the funds recovered,” he said. Adejobi noted that the Enugu State Government, along with other government Ministries, Departments, Agencies, and corporate entities, collaborated with the NPF-NCCC during the investigation. He also mentioned that this partnership had implemented robust security measures to protect the state’s financial systems. He urged the public to avoid spreading misinformation and to verify the reliability of news sources.

The Appeal Court prevents the Federal High Court from intervening in the legal dispute involving the Kano Emirate.

In a split ruling of two Justices against one, the Court of Appeal in Abuja has prohibited the Federal High Court in Kano from handling the legal dispute regarding the Kano Emirate. The appellate court determined that the federal high court lacks jurisdiction over Kano State Chieftaincy matters, which can only be addressed by the Kano high court. Justice Gabriel Omoniyi Kolawole, who issued the lead judgment on Friday, stated that the federal high court should not be involved in Chieftaincy issues and directed that the case be sent back to the Kano State high court, the appropriate court for such cases. However, Presiding Justice Mustapha Mohammed and another Justice concurred with Justice Kolawole that the federal high court has no jurisdiction in the matter, but disagreed on returning the case to the Kano Chief Judge for reassignment. Instead, the two Justices ruled that the proper course of action was to strike the case from the record, rather than remitting it. As a result, the proceedings in the federal high court were dismissed due to lack of jurisdiction. Further details will follow.
