Lebanon takes steps to elect a president following a two-year absence.

On Thursday, Lebanese lawmakers are set to finally elect a president after more than two years of stalemate, a necessary move to help the country recover from its financial crisis. Army chief Joseph Aoun is considered the leading candidate, with analysts suggesting he could facilitate the prompt deployment of the military to enforce a truce in southern Lebanon. The country has been without a president since Michel Aoun’s term ended in October 2022, and previous attempts to elect a president have failed due to a deadlock in parliament between pro-Hezbollah and anti-Hezbollah factions. The situation worsened for Hezbollah after a full-scale war with Israel last autumn, which resulted in significant losses, including the death of its long-time leader Hassan Nasrallah. In Syria, Hezbollah also lost a key ally when rebels ousted President Bashar al-Assad last month. With a fragile ceasefire in effect in southern Lebanon since late November, the 13th attempt to elect a new head of state will begin at 11:00 am (0900 GMT). In a country still affected by a civil war from 1975 to 1990, the divided political elite typically reaches a consensus on a candidate before any successful parliamentary vote. International pressure has increased ahead of the election, notably from French envoy Jean-Yves Le Drian, who has been invited to attend, and US envoy Amos Hochstein, who visited Beirut earlier this week to encourage lawmakers to succeed in the election. A Saudi envoy also visited Lebanon for the second time in two weeks. According to lawmakers who met with the Saudi and US envoys, there is a strong indication that both countries support Joseph Aoun. Lebanon’s caretaker Prime Minister, Najib Mikati, expressed optimism on Wednesday, stating, “For the first time since the presidency became vacant, I am pleased that God willing tomorrow we will have a president.”

Group urges Uba Sani to move NYSC orientation camp from Government College Kaduna immediately.

The Old Boys Association of Government College Kaduna (KADOBA) has urged Governor Uba Sani to stop using the school’s facilities as a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp, highlighting its negative impact on students’ education. During a press conference celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Class of 2004’s graduation, the association expressed concerns over the school’s deteriorating condition, citing insufficient space, classrooms, and essential resources. They claimed that these shortages are directly caused by parts of the college being turned into camps for NYSC orientation and civil defense training. While speaking at the event held on the school’s grounds in Abakpa, the Chairman of KADOBA (Class of 2004), Engr. AbdurRahman Musa called on the governor to make students’ education a priority by moving the NYSC camp. “The main reason for converting our school into an NYSC and civil defense training center was the insecurity in the state, particularly the risk of kidnappings in less populated regions,” Engr. said. – Mõistan. “Nevertheless, due to the enhanced security conditions during Governor Sani’s tenure, we think it is now appropriate to bring the corps members back to their permanent orientation camp on the Kaduna-Abuja road.” Musa praised Governor Sani for his efforts to improve security since taking office and urged him to stay dedicated to education. He is recognized as a leader who listens and is dedicated to the education of our children. It is disappointing to observe students lacking dormitories and educational resources because those spaces are being utilized for different purposes.

The troops also eliminated these terrorists during Operation Lake Sanity 2, a significant campaign aimed at fighting insurgency in the region. The operation was led by Force Commander Maj.-Gen. Ibrahim Salau shared this information during the MNJTF Operation Lake Sanity 23 Medal Parade on Wednesday at the MNJTF Headquarters in Farcha, N’Djamena, Chad. He noted that the MNJTF has achieved significant successes, aiding the return of over 30,000 refugees and internally displaced individuals, which has helped restore normalcy in their lives. Salau reported that the operation, which took place from April 23 to July 22, 2024, successfully dismantled key terrorist logistic bases, resulted in the deaths of 310 terrorists, and led to the arrest of 160 logistic suppliers and informants. He added that more than 800 terrorists and their families surrendered, signaling a decrease in support for terrorism. The commander recognized the efforts of operations like Amnifakat, Gamma Aiki, Yankin Tafki 1 and 2, and Lake Sanity 2, crediting their progress to the strong support from the troop-contributing countries and the Lake Chad Basin Development Commission. “The collaboration of ground troops and air forces from Cameroon, Chad, and Nigeria created six powerful task forces united against terrorism,” he stated. Limited air support from the Nigerien Republic also played a role in the success of the operation, he stated. Salau noted that compensation ceremonies were previously conducted for fallen and injured soldiers in Cameroon and Nigeria, with a similar event planned for Sector 2 in Chad to honor their memory. He explained that the ceremony in Chad aims to pay tribute to the sacrifices of soldiers during Operation Lake Sanity 2, which resulted in several casualties and many injuries among the troops. Salau praised development partners for their support in enhancing regional security and stability. Chadian Defense Minister Mr. Issaka Malloua Djamous reaffirmed the commitment to peace and security in the region. Djamous characterized Operation Lake Sanity as a crucial step in combating Boko Haram, emphasizing the destruction of terrorist bases and the neutralization of various threats. He urged troops to remain vigilant against changing terrorist strategies, highlighting the need for improved human and material resources. The minister acknowledged the European Union and other partners for their assistance with training and equipment, and called for stronger regional cooperation and collective commitment among member states. The event was attended by the governors of the Lake Chad countries, the Chief of Defense of the Lake Chad countries, traditional leaders, and other high-ranking government officials.
