A 3.7 magnitude earthquake has struck California, the United States, adding to the state’s ongoing tough challenges with worsening wildfires.. This comes as Los Angeles continues to fight raging wildfires, which were allegedly started by an arsonist who has since been arrested.. Mail Online reports that the tremor was detected near the San Francisco Bay Area at 7:02 am PT, with its epicentre approximately five miles southwest of the Golden Gate Bridge and two miles west of the Great Highway.. The quake was followed by a 2.2 magnitude aftershock four minutes later and a 2.5 magnitude tremor six minutes after the initial hit.. The US Geological Survey (USGS) reported that more than 5,000 people in the area felt the shake, and the number of reports continues to grow.. This seismic activity occurred about 350 miles away from the Los Angeles area, where wildfires have caused widespread destruction.. “I ordered city government into action immediately this morning, and our first responders have been out across the city ensuring the safety of our residents.. “We have also been sharing information and giving people the tools to protect themselves and their families in an event like this,” Mayor Daniel Lurie commented on the situation.. Despite the tremors, no injuries or damage have been reported from Friday’s earthquake.. The USGS had detected a 3.0 magnitude earthquake the day before, disrupting San Francisco’s Muni subway service.. Many reported that the quake lasted only a second.
FA Cup: ‘They’re leaving’ – Maresca drops two Chelsea players for Morecambe tie
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca will leave both Ben Chilwell and Cesare Casadei out of his squad this weekend for the visit of Morecambe in the FA Cup third round.. Speaking to the media on Friday, Maresca admitted that he did not want the players to pick up injuries, which could hinder their exit from Stamford Bridge.. “Chilwell, I think, is thinking at this moment that he is probably going to leave, so it’s better to avoid using him to prevent any kind of situation, injury, or those kinds of things.. “It’s more or less the same [for Casadei]. At this moment, the plan is to not give him minutes in case there is an opportunity for him to go and play,” Maresca said.. Chilwell has made 107 appearances for the Blues since he arrived from Leicester City in 2020.. However, Maresca has barely used the 27-year-old this season, and he is set to leave for more playing time.. Casadei is attracting interest from Feyenoord and Monza.. Aggrieved members disrupt AGN meeting in Umuahia
Some aggrieved members of the Actors Guild of Nigeria, AGN, stormed the venue of a meeting convened by the National President of AGN, Emeka Rollas, and disrupted it on Thursday.. It took the intervention of the Zone 9 Command of the Nigeria Police Force, Umuahia, to stop the event from turning violent.. The aggrieved members, who were protesting against the National President, said they were at the meeting to protest what they described as an illegal gathering.. They demanded that David Onyebuchi Amalaha, who was elected as chairman of the Abia State chapter of the Actors Guild of Nigeria on May 20, 2023, in Umuahia, be recognised by the National President, Emeka Rollas.. According to them, AGN has witnessed several litigation instituted in the state by David Onyebuchi Amalaha in an effort to stop the alleged imposition of leadership by the national body.. Some of the concerned AGN members, including Chika Okezie, Egwuatu Daniel, and Nathaniel Nwoko, who spoke about the disrupted meeting, said the National President was causing crises and division among AGN members by imposing five interim state chairmen since 2023, among other allegations.. Confirming the development to DAILY POST on Friday, the Police Public Relations Officer of Zone 9 Command Umuahia, SP Iheanetu Bruno Chukwudera, said it was the intervention of the Zone 9 Command that stopped what could have been a violent situation.. He disclosed that the AGN National President, Emeka Rollas, and the leaders of the aggrieved party were not arrested by the police but were only invited by the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 9, to write statements.. “There was actually chaos caused by some aggrieved members. Nobody was arrested by the Police. They have a factional leadership problem. The key actors in the chaos were invited by the AIG and made to write statements based on what happened during the meeting,” he said.
Edo: NSCDC arrests 15 illegal private security operators
The Edo State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, said on Friday that 15 suspects were arrested for operating private security guard companies without a licence in the state.. Gbenga Agun, the State Commandant of the corps, who disclosed this in Benin during an event organised to mark the new year and his one year in office, said that five private guard companies were also sealed off by the corps.. Agun also added that the Private Guards Companies Department of the command trained 96 private guard personnel in the period under review.. While disclosing that 110 suspects were arrested for various criminal offences in the state in 2024, he added that five of the cases were charged to court, with five judgements secured in favour of the corps, and six others still pending in court.. He added that the anti-fraud unit of the command also recovered N1,655,000 for various victims in the year under review, among several other interventions.. According to him, the command handled 25 cases of intervention by the Agro Rangers Unit, preventing bloody clashes between farmers and herders.. “The corps also provided security services to farms like Okomu, Ellah Lakes Farms and NCSC Farms, among others. The Peace and Conflict Unit of the command also resolved 59 cases,” he said.
Ebonyi Govt vows to clamp down on substandard schools
Ebonyi State Commissioner for Education Professor Paul Nwobashi has reiterated the government’s readiness to clamp down on substandard primary and secondary schools in the state.. Nwobashi made the disclosure while speaking in Abakaliki on Friday.. He stated that all schools in the state would be opening on Monday, January 13, 2025, stressing that any school that deviates from the stipulated date would be sanctioned.. Explaining that the 22-classroom model school block with an aesthetic design, ongoing in different zones in the state, would be completed soon, he added that the re-introduction of reading in Nigerian schools would help curb the poor reading culture.. While acknowledging the ministry’s readiness to implement history and reading in schools, Nwobashi hinted that the new policy would go a long way in shaping the educational system in the country.. The commissioner, while explaining the government’s readiness to improve manpower in the educational system, said that successful applicants who sat for the teachers’ recruitment test would soon be made public, and he enjoined parents to rise to their responsibilities in ensuring that their children are up and doing.
Police investigate Yola Town Market fire
The Adamawa State Police Command has launched an investigation to unravel the circumstances surrounding the fire which destroyed a section of a temporary market in Yola, on Thursday.. The temporary market in Yola Town, in the Yola South Local Government Area of the Yola capital city, was opened in 2024 to accommodate users of the permanent Yola Town market destroyed by fire that year and closed down for reconstruction.. Governor Ahmadu Fintiri had stressed that the decision to pull down all structures in the permanent market site and build a completely new market was taken in view of a history of frequent fire incidents there.. He had said the design of the new market would check future fire incidents, and make access for intervention easy, should any fire still occur.. While the reconstruction at the permanent Yola Town market complex is ongoing, however, the temporary market, opened only about four months ago, was itself gutted by fire in the night of Thursday, January 9, 2025.. Suspecting foul play in the incessant fire incidents, the state Police Command has now commenced an investigation.. The state Police Spokesman, SP Suleiman Nguroje, in a statement on Friday, urged the public with any useful information to approach the Command.. Meanwhile, it has been gathered that leaders of various groups within the market are making their own consultations on divine ways to avert fire in the future.

Niger Tornadoes have commenced preparations for the second stanza of the 2024-25 Nigeria Premier Football League, NPFL, season.. The players regrouped at the Bako Kontagora Stadium on Friday.. Niger Tornadoes technical adviser, Majin Mohammed took charge of the training session alongside his technical assistants.. The Ikon Allah Boys recently embarked on a 10-day break after the completion of the first stanza.. Niger Tornadoes recorded six wins, six draws and seven defeats from 19 games.. They currently occupy 10th position in the NPFL table with 24 points.. Niger Tornadoes will be in action against Rangers when the second round of the NPFL resume.. The second round is expected to resume on Saturday, January 25, 2025.
Kano Governor blasts Ganduje for 8 years neglect of pensioners
Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf has faulted a former Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje of running the state into abject poverty by failing to pay pensioners their eight years of arrears of their entitlement.. Yusuf stated this in a keynote speech during the unveiling of the third pension scheme with an added ₦5 billion into the purse against debts owed the pensioners.. He explained that the current debt burden of ₦48 billion was as a result of the negligence of Ganduje’s administration in refusing to pay pensions, including even those of pensioners who had died.. A statement by the governor’s spokesperson, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, further quoted Governor Yusuf as sympathizing with the pensioners over their dire experiences while Ganduje held sway for eight years.. The governor said, “The payment of at least ₦16 billion to 6,886 pensioners is part of our government’s efforts toward fulfilling the promises we made during the 2023 election campaign, and I assured them that I will continue to pay their entitlements to improve their lives.”. He further announced the increase in monthly pension from ₦5,000 to ₦20,000, explaining it was in keeping with the increase in the cost of living and inflation.. Earlier in his address of welcome, the president of the National Union of Teachers, Comrade Titus Audu Amba, commended the governor for the payment of entitlements accruable to workers who are both retired and dead.
