Call of the Wilde: Montreal Canadiens defeat Vancouver Canucks in OT drama

The Montreal Canadiens returned house in the race for a playoff place after one of the most powerful Christmas road trips this decade. The Canadiens beat the next four Stanley Cup leaders Colorado, Vegas, Tampa Bay and Florida in attaining a 4-2 report on the six-game vacation. They had to make sure they kept the velocity going when they hosted the Vancouver Canucks, which they did in a thrilling time victory with a score of 5-4. Wild Animals The Canadiens had a great start, with both Jayden Struble and Kaiden Guhle delivering punishing hits. With a forearm chance from the high slot, Cole Caufield counted his 22nd purpose of the time before the match was two hours older. That’s targets in four right matches for Caufield. He is presently pro-rated for 45 on the year. The Canadians therefore put three right on the table. Two months ago, if the Canadiens allowed two in 20 hours to route 3-1, they wouldn’t have had any opposition, but these nights, they kept on believing. Kaiden Guhle scored his fourth goal of the year with a 3-2 lead, and Kirby Dach continued his powerful play with his fifth purpose in his last six games. The Canadiens ‘ powerful fight continued shortly after, with Lane Hutson intentionally banking a shot past the keeper in front of the internet. Hutson then has 30 points on the time to guide rookies in the points competition. This was Hutson’s best game of the season. Due to the ongoing underreach of Hutson, which he appears to be, in second place, for the Calder Trophy. The Canadiens won this exceptional game in overtime thanks to a flawless energy play setup. Suzuki could include a free search in all the room that Hutson made available. With a flawless picture, Suzuki made no mistakes. A three-point day was had by Suzuki. He has 41 positions in 40 game. The French clinch the game once more with a 5-4 succeed. Wild Goats For the first time since their fourth game of the season, the Canadiens have over.500. Additionally, they are tied for the Eastern Conference’s last playoff place. Montreal needed to finish the year at 7-4 in every 11 game section, according to reports next month. In the first category, they were 7-4. In the next category, they are 4-1 now. This resilient party, who continues to surprise, deserves praise. In this utter fine, there is no sheep. Wilde Cards At the middle level of the time, it is time for the Wilde Awards. Instead of a traditional look at the season with accolades like “best forward” ( Nick Suzuki ) or “best defenseman” ( Lane Hutson ), it’s a slightly more original look at the team’s “best of” after 40 games. Most Underappreciated Player – Virtually no value is given to him in the league, but all he does is fight back and prevail. During the new road vacation, Suzuki faced Alex Barkov, Brayden Point, Jack Eichel, and Nathan MacKinnnon, and beat them all. In four game, four of the NHL’s top centers scored one goal. Suzuki’s collection was on for just one even-strength target against in those four activities. Suzuki is one of the best two-way facilities in sports, and he didn’t actually find a scent for the Four Nations Tournament. The stability of the entire team has been altered by the best public manager move, Alexandre Carrier, who replaced Justin Barron. Carrier has perfected a correct side opening in Montreal while Barron is struggling in Nashville. Kaiden Guhle can perform the left side where he is obviously better because of Carrier’s stable and strong character. David Savard has also been given a new role in the second matching thanks to Carrier’s arrival, which means fewer minutes and less match-ups. Best Head Coaching Decision – Martin St. Louis reaffirmed his conviction that he wasn’t required to transition from the cross program. His continued instruction in the hardest aspects has conveyed to his people a distinct concept that he believes in them. If he had simplified all of his ideas, it would have stated that they were insufficient and did not possess the characteristics he believed they did. It’s sent a message of endurance as also, that however long it takes, it will get done correctly. They have installed the program. They are smoothly rotating on the fly. They have tightened their army considerably. Most Surprising Player: Jakub Dobes is the one who wins, despite the complexity of the situation. He has just played two events, but a.982 save portion is tremendous. His professionalism is amazing. His flair is onlymatched by his saves’ quality, which is unparalleled. No one could have predicted the distinction between Dobes and Primeau at.836 before the period started. It is a total shock when the goaltending position turns in this way. The third-highest freshman goal scorer in the NHL deserves more, according to Player Who Deserves More at this time. With this achievement, Emil Heineman deserves a chance to get on the roster. With Juraj Slafkovsky struggling, Heineman may become tried on the first line. With Patrik Laine ill with the virus, he might have been able to try him on the following line. Additionally, he might receive more strength play day. Heineman has a strong 200-foot game, but if he has a chance, he won’t damage the club. He’s earned it. Most Superior Player: Jake Evans is having his best year yet at the age of 28. Evans is shooting 30 % when he was fortunate to receive 10 % in other seasons. He has 10 targets now when 13 is his job great. He has likely moved from a two-year contract offer of$ 2 million per season, to a four-year contract with a yearly salary of$ 4 million. With about a double-digit result in ambitions over the next best third collection in all of the NHL, Evans is centring the best third collection in all of the league. The most exciting player is Lane Hutson, who has the ability to make them all out of their seats while throwing crowns for his hat trick against Buffalo on every other day. He is thrilling to enjoy. His rookie season has been incredible, and his ability to have the puck relatively at his will against the best players in the world is amazing. He is just 20. Hutson sells reservations. The Canadiens have never had such a joy to watch on their squad since Alex Kovalev. General Best Prospect: He is not only the best idea for the Canadiens, but also, according to ESPN, the best idea not in the NHL. With only 11 minutes of playing per day, Ivan Demidov is on the verge of becoming the best KHL draft-plus-one player in the league’s history. Everyone will be saying the same thing in a year:” How did Demidov drop half overall”? Best Prospect in Laval – With so many top prospects to choose from, including Logan Mailloux, Adam Engstrom, and Joshua Roy, Owen Beck will be the best player. Beck is the next leading scorer on the team, but the chief in plus/minus at plus-10. He plays the defense roles with great intelligence and is a center with a dependable game. Beck will be the next Rocket to play for the Canadiens regularly. As there should be, there is a lot of hope in these prizes. This is a cheerful time. Since Kent Hughes became the GM in his 36th quarter, the restore has already begun to show signs of growth and maturity. They are now making headway with postseason expectations. Given the ability that is still developing, this is incredible. 4: 53

Jessie Simpson’s mom still fighting for settlement as court case put over again

Nearly nine years after Jessie Simpson was beaten into a coma in Kamloops his mother said they still have yet to see a cent from a court settlement.

Susanna Simpson was in court on Monday fighting for some of the $7 million that was awarded to her son by a judge in 2021.

Kristopher Teichrieb pleaded guilty to aggravated assault in connection with the case.

He was sentenced to seven years in prison minus time served and has been out on statutory release since 2021.

The sale of his house was ordered after Teichrieb was found responsible for damages in a civil lawsuit. The home was sold for just under $1 million after it was found Teichrieb originally sold his home to his parents in an effort to try and hide his assets but the proceeds are still tied up in the system.

“It’s just, it’s frustrating,” Susanna told Global News.

“Everything’s frustrating. It’s been held over again. We’re waiting for a trial. Possibly we may lose. It’s very frustrating for Jessie. Very frustrating. Definitely. After nine years, I’d like to see some justice for Jessie. And it’s very, very hard to keep going on nine years later.”

Susanna said she fears that her son is going to end up with nothing.

“What have I fought for for the past nine years?” she asked.

On Monday it was revealed that the case has been adjourned again to a later date.

“Every time we go to court, every time it’s adjourned, it’s thousands of dollars that are taken from my son,” Susanna said.

A GoFundMe remains active for Jessie to help with his care.

Susanna said the money would be used to buy a van to take Jessie out and to help him live comfortably at home, and not in a care home.

The man who was behind the wheel in a Surrey hit-and-run where the victim’s body was found more than a kilometre from where he was struck has pleaded guilty.

Gaganpreet Singh pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, failing to stop at the scene of a collision and interfering with a body at Surrey Provincial Court on Monday.

Singh declined to comment outside the courthouse, but his lawyer Gagan Nahal called the Jan. 27, 2024 collision a “very tragic incident.”

“It was a winter evening that night, it was dark outside and there was someone laying on the road … so he wasn’t really visible — unfortunately, we don’t know if that person was already deceased beforehand, but the vehicle struck that pedestrian,” Nahal said.

“We can’t bring back a loved one here, but Mr. Singh did the right thing today and he showed his remorse by entering guilty pleas. He’s not denying or minimizing his involvement in what happened that night.”

Singh did not plead guilty to a fourth charge in the incident of attempting to pervert justice.

At the time of the crash, Surrey RCMP said the victim, Jason Albert Grey, was struck around 1:40 a.m. in the roadway north on University Drive at 104 Avenue.

A witness reported seeing a red Ford Mustang strike the man before driving away.

Nahal said Singh was in Canada from India on a study permit.

He said Singh hoped to remain in the country, but was aware that his plea could jeopardize his immigration status in Canada.

A second man, Jagdeep Singh, was also charged in the case, and is due in court later this month.

Manitoba launches new system governing teacher conduct, including online registry

A new disciplinary process and online registry for Manitoba teachers is now in effect.

The public registry, revealed by the NDP government Monday, allows anyone to search by name and see whether a teacher has had their certificate suspended or cancelled.

The registry was first promised by the former Progressive Conservative government and is similar to registries in Ontario and British Columbia.

Unlike those provinces, however, Manitoba’s does not include details of a teacher’s wrongdoing or any penalties imposed beyond suspension or cancellation of a certificate.

“At first glance, it looks like there’s potentially some missing details in that,” said Wayne Ewasko, interim leader of the Progressive Conservatives, who are now in Opposition.
The government said more details are coming.

“Moving forward, there will be information on the registry regarding decisions made by the panel or any agreement coming out of a consent resolution,” read an email Thursday from the government’s central communications office.

The government also says a new process for investigating complaints against teachers is now in place.

The review process is led by an independent commissioner and cases can be referred to a hearing panel made up of teachers, members of the public and representatives nominated by the Manitoba School Boards Association.

Tracy Schmidt, the minister of education and early childhood learning, says the change will ensure reviews are done in a reliable and transparent way.

Trio of proposed safety plans contemplate role of police in Victoria schools

After removing police officers from its schools, the Greater Victoria School District has submitted a trio of proposed safety plans to the province in time for a Jan. 6 deadline demanded by the province’s education minister.

The move comes after Education Minister Lisa Beare rejected a previous plan in December, which the province had ordered in September.

The district scrapped its school liaison police officer program last year over concerns police on school grounds were having a negative impact on Black and Indigenous students. The province subsequently demanded the safety plan, raising concerns about growing gang activity in schools and deteriorating relations with police.

Click to play video: 'Province promises new safety plan for Victoria School District 61'

Province promises new safety plan for Victoria School District 61

In December, Beare appointed a special advisor to rework the district’s safety plan, and suggested the board could be replaced by a trustee if the safety plan was inadequate.

A draft plan spearheaded by the advisor, former Abbotsford School District superintendent Kevin Godden, is among the three plans put forward, but the board said Monday it would prefer the province choose one of the two alternate plans it authored itself.

In a memorandum, the board disputed the ministry’s jurisdiction to demand the safety plan but said it was complying with Beare’s order to avoid dismissal.

Under the board’s preferred plan, Victoria-area police would be able to assign officers to each school in the district.

Those officers would be required to “work with a trauma-informed lens to work with vulnerable and or high-risk youth populations,” and support and participate in cultural sensitivity, restorative practice and trauma-informed training.

If the province rejects Plan A, the board asks the province to approve a Plan B, which would only see officers on school grounds in non-emergency situations when invited “to present school-wide on a relevant topic, such as gang recruitment, cyber/social media online safety and exploitation” or to assist families by providing resources.

In the event the province rejects both plans, the board asks it to approve Plan C, the plan authored by the special advisor and the district.

This plan would also see police working with a trauma-informed lens deployed to schools in non-emergency situations.

However, in its memorandum, the district argued the advisor’s plan was “problematic in a number of respects,” including that it was “less detailed” than the district’s own November plan, failed to include input from educational partners, and didn’t meet some of the requirements of the ministry’s own order.

The district also pushed back on the province’s claims of a lack of coordination with police and of increasing gang activity in schools, saying “no empirical data was cited or provided to support” the assertion.

In a statement, Beare said she had received the trio of safety plans and the ministry was “working through reviewing them.”

“My priority continues to be student safety, and I’ll have more to share when our reviews are complete,” Beare wrote.

TORONTO – Damian Lillard scored 25 points, while Giannis Antetokounmpo added 11 more with 13 assists and 12 rebounds in the Milwaukee Bucks 128-104 win against the Toronto Raptors on Monday.

Lillard’s offensive output in only 26 minutes of playing time was highlighted by five three-pointers as the Bucks halted their mini two-game slide at Scotiabank Arena.

R.J. Barrett returned after a three-game absence because of the flu to pace the Raptors with 25 points.

This was the first time the Raptors (8-28) had all five starters healthy this season and the first time since March 1 that their big three — Barrett, Scottie Barnes, and Immanuel Quickley — shared the floor.

    Related Videos

Barnes chipped in 21 points while centre Jakob Poeltl added 12. Quickley and Dick were good for 11 apiece.

The Bucks led 28-19 after the first quarter, 66-47 at the half and 99-75 after the third.

The Raptors went a poor 9 for 35 from beyond the three-point arc.

Bobby Portis scored 18 points as Milwaukee (18-16) won for the fourth time in nine starts since claiming the NBA Cup three weeks ago.

    TAKEAWAYS

Raptors: A sloppy Toronto squad committed three over-and-back violations in the first three quarters.

Bucks: The Raptors feted Milwaukee guard Gary Trent Jr. with a video scoreboard tribute at the beginning of the second quarter. He spent three years with the Raptors before signing with the Bucks as a free agent last summer.

    KEY MOMENT

After Gradey Dick hit a baseline three-pointer, the Bucks responded with back-to-back three-point jumpers from Lillard and Taurean Prince to open a 77-52 lead with 7:49 remaining in the third quarter.

    KEY STAT

Two-time NBA MVP Antetokounmpo played despite a sore knee but didn’t play in the fourth quarter. His limited action meant it was the first time this season he failed to score 20-plus points in a game.

    UP NEXT

For the second time in less than a year, a vacant Euclid Avenue church went up in flames Monday night.

Crews arrived just after 6 p.m. to find heavy smoke and flames coming from the building and have been battling it throughout the evening.

They are expected to be there for much of the night and are using an aerial truck to fight it.

The cold temperatures are causing challenging conditions for firefighters, with the area around the scene being covered with ice and slippery. Road closures in the area will remain in place until work is completed at the scene.

The church was previously damaged in a fire back in June of 2024 and had previous damage from fires at a neighbouring Main Street building in 2021 and 2023.
