CoE condemns EMPD strike

Local newsNews

The CoE has condemned the EMPD strike action that took place today (March 19) labelling it as illegal. The strike saw major routes blocked off causing a backlog of traffic and disruptions this morning.

City spokesperson Zweli Dlamini says this protest action caused major delays.

“We strongly condemn this unlawful protest action as it compromises public safety and disrupts the daily commute of thousands of residents and visitors.”

He says the city is actively engaging with relevant stakeholders and law enforcement agencies to resolve the situation swiftly.

The strike, which has now disbanded, is alleged to be over the demand of salary adjustments and EMPD officers being disgruntled over the city’s decision to scrap overtime payments.

Affected routes this morning included the Gillooly’s Interchange, N12 West between Putfontein and Kingsway off-ramp and Daveyton off-ramp, R21 between R23 and R25 and the Benoni off-ramp, and the N17 near Carnival City.
