A land dispute between the municipality of Grand Dakar, led by the mayor Jean-Baptiste Diouf, and the Association des Imams et Oulémas du Sénégal, led by El Hadji Oumar Diène. The dispute is over a strategic terrain located between the station Edk and the Mosque “Massalikoul Djinan”, each party claiming its property. The imams claim to have legitimate rights to the land and plan to build a mosque and related infrastructure. El Hadji Oumar Diène denounces an “attempt of appropriation” by the mairie and accuses it of having demolished the enclosure wall, digging a well and depositing materials to rebuild the parcel. De son côté, le maire Jean-Baptiste Diouf contests these allegations. He has denied the allegations. It maintains that it is not a building site, but a street belonging to the public communal domain. La mairie ne veut pas y ériger un centre commercial ou des cantines, explaining that it wishes only to proceed to paving works in the general interest. Faced with the impasse, the mayor approached the sous-préfecture, which asked the Association des Imams et Oulémas to provide documents attesting to their property rights.
