Can we believe that an editorial in Israel’s largest newspaper is finally telling the truth about the Palestinians, describing them as one of the best people in the world, standing up for their rights after 75 years? In one of the rare expressions of a living conscience, and one of the most beautiful expressions of intellectual freedom, the author writes: During the war against Gaza and the firing of rockets by the resistance against us, our losses, every three days, exceed 912 million dollars in air sorties, in Patriot missiles, in refueling of vehicles and fuel, and in consumption of munitions and missiles of all types. To this are added the cessation of trade, the collapse of the stock exchange, the suspension of most institutions and construction sites, the complete blockade in all sectors of agriculture, industry and commerce, as well as the death of poultry on farms, for tens of millions of dollars. Some air and rail lines are also paralysed, not to mention the cost of feeding the refugees in the shelters and the destruction caused by Palestinian rockets to homes, businesses, cars and factories. We are talking about a war that we have started, fuelled and ignited, but which we do not control, and which we will certainly not end in our own interests. The end is not in our favour, especially since the Arab cities of Israel have surprised everyone with this massive revolt against us, when we thought they had lost their Palestinian compass. This is a bad omen for a state whose politicians have realized that all their calculations were wrong, and that their policies required a much broader vision than they had envisaged. As for the Palestinians, they are effectively the true owners of this land. Who else but a proprietor defends his land, his property, and his children with such ferocity, such dignity and such defiance? As a Jew, I challenge anyone to prove that the entire State of Israel possesses an attachment and an ingrainment to this land comparable to those of the Palestinians.
