Court Sentences Jealous Woman To 20 Years In Prison For Pouring Acid On Face Of Love Rival

Polokwane – Yvonne Maja, the 25-year-old woman who, in a fit of jealousy, poured acid on her love rival, has been sentenced to a long prison term, almost twice her age.

The Mokopane Regional Court has sentenced Maja to an effective 20 years’ direct imprisonment for attempted murder and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH).

On Monday, 9 February 2026, the accused was sentenced to 18 years’ direct imprisonment for attempted murder (count 1) and two years’ direct imprisonment for assault GBH (count 2).

Evidence during the trial showed that on 13 October 2024, at about 17:30, Maja went to her ex-boyfriend’s residence in Mogoto Mabereng, Zebediela, in Limpopo, where she found him with his new partner.

An argument ensued, during which the accused insulted the 27-year-old female whom she found with her ex-boyfriend.

She subsequently poured acid on the woman’s face, which flowed over her body, causing severe injuries.

The acid also affected her 28-year-old ex-boyfriend, who sustained less serious injuries.

Both victims were rushed to Zebediela Hospital.

The woman was then transferred to Mankweng Hospital, where she remained hospitalised for about seven months.

The accused was t arrested on 14 February 2025.

She initially appeared before the Lebowakgomo Magistrate’s Court, where she was granted bail of R3 000.

The matter was later transferred to the Mokopane Regional Court for trial.

The case was thoroughly investigated by Sergeant Nthapa Judah Swafo, whose diligent work ensured the successful conviction and sentencing.

SA Police Service Limpopo Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe welcomed the sentence.

She reiterated the police’s commitment to deal decisively with violent crimes, particularly those arising from domestic and relationship-related disputes.

Such acts of violence will not be tolerated, and perpetrators will be held accountable through the criminal justice system.
