Nigerians in the United States on Saturday rose above religious and ethnic affiliations in solidarity with the homeland amid Nigeria’s recent designation as a “Country of Particular Concern” by the US.
The Nigerians, who trooped out in colourful outfits, converged on the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in Washington, DC, to celebrate the 2025 Nigeria Day.
“Despite the challenges facing our country, Nigerians remain united by a common commitment to peace, coexistence and national progress,” Itegboje said.
“Across religious, ethnic and regional lines, Nigerians continue to work together to build a more secure, prosperous and inclusive country.”
The Nigerian envoy noted the recent concerns surrounding Nigeria’s designation as a Country of Particular Concern.
According to him, the Nigerian government believes that the designation presents another opportunity to deepen Nigeria–U.S. relations.
“The Government of Nigeria recognises the seriousness of the CPC and welcomes sustained engagement and dialogue with the United States.
“Nigeria firmly believes that complex security and humanitarian challenges are best addressed through partnership rather than isolation.
“We remain committed to protecting all citizens, regardless of faith or background, and to strengthening accountability, early-warning mechanisms and coordinated responses to insecurity.”
Making reference to Nigeria’s role in aborting the recent military coup in the Republic of Benin, Itegboje said Nigeria remained the bulwark against democratic backsliding and terrorism in the West African sub-region and the Sahel.
“It was Nigeria, following the call for assistance by the government of Benin, that immediately sent troops to forestall that coup attempt.
“This is what Nigeria is capable of doing in the region.
“The United States needs to continuously partner with Nigeria to stabilise the sub-region and rid it of terrorism and undemocratic government,” he stressed.
He extended “Nigeria’s sincere appreciation” to the U.S. Government, members of Congress, diplomatic partners and friends of Nigeria for their continued engagement and friendship.
“When the most powerful country in the world, which also doubles as the bastion of democracy, teams up with the biggest democracy in Africa, rest assured that big things will happen.
“We look forward to deepening our partnership in a spirit of mutual respect, shared responsibility and constructive collaboration,” he said.
The Nigerian diplomat expressed pride that Nigerian-Americans are leaders in medicine, technology, business, public service, academia and the arts, buttressing it with data.
Itegboje lauded the unique roles Nigerians play in the development of Nigeria and the U.S.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the event was attended by Nigerians from all walks of life, diplomats and friends of Nigeria.
Some of those who spoke to NAN lauded the achievements of Nigerians on the global stage and their contributions to the homeland.
They expressed optimism that with purposeful leadership, Nigeria would attain its great potential.
