The CPF chairperson calls on the community to tighten safety measures and work with law enforcement to prevent seasonal crime.

Tsakani – CPF chairperson Mncedisi Somyo urges community members to stay safe and vigilant during the cold months, saying crime is usually at its peak in winter.
“Criminal activities grow momentum in winter because many things change. It also gets darker earlier.
“Winter is a time for neighbourhood watches, unity and vigilance. Criminals take advantage of the longer nights and poor lighting to break in unnoticed.
“I tip all community members to reinforce their doors, install motion sensor lights and stay alert for unfamiliar movements,” said Somyo.
He said many thieves use the quietness in winter to steal electrical cables for copper resale, which also increases illegal connections.
Somyo encouraged community members to collaborate with law enforcement agencies by reporting illegal activities to combat crime during winter.
“CPF members will continue to patrol in the township. All we need is assistance from the community by reporting suspicious activities, movements and unfamiliar noises.
“More people withdraw money in winter for supplies and social grants. Scammers target these points. Tips to community members are to cover your PIN when using the ATM, not accept help from strangers and keep cash securely tucked away,” he added.
He mentioned other criminal activities that might occur:
• Hijackings and smash-and-grabs: Avoid sitting in an idling car to keep it warm. Avoid waiting for someone in the car when it is dark. This attracts criminals and is a danger. Be vigilant when entering or exiting your home. Avoid isolated or dark parking areas.
• House burglaries: Keep doors and gates locked when inside during winter. Ensure you switch on your lights in time every day.
Safety tips:
• Encourage children to remember the safety rules – avoid talking to strangers or playing on the road until late;
• When walking on the street, refrain from using your phone and AirPods and trust your instincts;
• Avoid walking alone at night; walk in groups;
• Avoid passages and hidden routes;
• When indoors, switch off appliances like gas stoves and candles before going to bed;
• Avoid open flames and veld fires.
