The Senegalese government announced on Thursday the active participation of President Bassirou Diomaye Faye in the extraordinary summit of the ECOWAS devoted to the crisis in Guinea-Bissau, after the seizure of power by elements of the army. During this virtual session, West African Heads of State strongly condemned the attempted seizure of power by force and called for the immediate re-establishment of constitutional order. They also demanded the immediate release of President Umaro Sissoco Embaló and the arrested persons. The communiqué underlines that the Senegalese authorities are in direct contact with the Bissau-Guinean actors since the beginning of the crisis. These exchanges focused in particular on the release of political leaders, the reopening of borders and the repatriation of electoral observers. An aircraft chartered by Dakar was allowed to return to Senegal by President Embaló. The Senegalese Government reaffirms its readiness to work with ECOWAS, the African Union and its partners to promote stability and the restoration of democratic legitimacy in Guinea-Bissau.
