The Senegalese capital is about to enter a new era. The Prime Minister, Ousmane Sonko, presided, on Tuesday, 2 September 2025, at the Grand Théâtre de Dakar, the launch ceremony of the project “Dakar Métropole 2050”, an ambitious initiative carried by the Ministry of Urbanism, Territorial Collectivities and Territorial Planning. In a discourse without détour, le chef du gouvernement insisted on the urgency of a new departure for the capital. “Dakar has grown up in disorder… Dakar must be worthy of a capital… Dakar needs organization”, said Ousmane Sonko, calling for a break with excessive centralisation. “We must stop thinking of the other poles from Dakar. The State will provide the means for all the adjustments”, he added. “Dakar Métropole”: an ambition for a global transformation of the city.
