Parliamentary proceedings on January 4, 2025, took a dramatic turn when a New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP made a highly controversial remark directed at Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, the Member of Parliament for Korle-Klottey. The chamber was thrown into chaos when a voice from the Minority benches was heard shouting, “Daughter of a murderer, sit down! Daughter of a murderer, sit down!”,a statement aimed at Dr.-Zanetor Rawlings.
The outburst occurred during discussions on the 60th anniversary of the death of statesman Joseph Boakye Danquah. The debate became heated when Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, MP for Tamale Central, questioned the praises being given to JB Danquah by the Minority. This led to a series of tense exchanges, prompting Speaker Andrew Asiamah to intervene, declaring that only parliamentary leadership would be allowed to contribute further.
At that moment, Dr. Agyeman-Rawlings was on her feet, seeking permission to speak, but the Speaker instead gave the floor to Minority Leader Afenyo-Markin. As he began his remarks, MPs continued to interrupt, and that was when the offensive comment was made. Another MP was even heard adding, “But there is evidence that her father killed people.”
The comments have been widely condemned by Ghanaians on social media, with many expressing disappointment over the deteriorating level of discourse in Parliament. Critics argue that the legislative body is gradually losing its essence and importance, considering the kind of statements being made by Honourable lawmakers.
