The Tribunal de Grande Instance Hors Classe de Dakar delivered its verdict on 17 October last in the case between the influential and militant member of the PASTEF party, Adama Diop, and the Délégation générale à l’Entrepreneuriat Rapide pour les Femmes et les Jeunes (DER/FJ). Ms Diop was found guilty of defamation and dissemination of false information, and sentenced to two months’ imprisonment with suspended sentence. The DER/FJ, which had constituted itself as a civil party, found its claim admissible and was awarded a symbolic damages franc. Adama Diop, known on social networks for his political positions, had spread allegations accusing the DER/FJ of fraudulent financing practices. These accusations, qualified d’infondées par la justice, could not be supported by the evidence during the trial. The DER/FJ, directed by Aïda Mbodj, a Senegalese political figure of long standing, is a public institution charged with supporting entrepreneurship among young people and women, with an emphasis on transparency and integrity. Aïda Mbodj, former mayor of Bambey and ex-députée, was appointed to head the DER/FJ to promote inclusive entrepreneurial initiatives.
