First lady of Imo State, Barrister Chioma Uzodimma, has disclosed that early detection and prevention are the best ways to combat the scourge of cancer among women.
Uzodimma spoke during a public health walk held in Owerri to mark the 2026 World Cancer Day, themed ‘United by Unique’.
She described cancer as a critical health and public concern, calling for a united front and increased private sector investment in cancer care.
Uzodimma said “On this World Cancer Day, let us honour every unique journey by strengthening our collective resolve, promoting early detection and prevention, investing in sustainable cancer financing, and supporting patients and survivors with dignity and care.”
The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health, Mr Adino Kennedy, maintained that cancer is not a death sentence.
“Cancer is not a death sentence. It is curable, especially when detected earlier. I want you to use this medium to go home to your various communities and villages and sensitize people on the causes, diagnosis, and cure for cancer,” he said.
