Ekurhuleni City Manager clashes with council over retirement date

Local newsNews

Imogen Mashazi and Ekurhuleni officials are locked in a dispute over her early exit, with the city manager alleging financial motives behind the council’s push.

The City of Ekurhuleni’s city manager, Dr Imogen Mashazi, is in a standoff with metro officials over her continued tenure as she nears retirement.

Mashazi, who has held the position since 2016, is resisting a council resolution that mandates her to go on a leave of absence ahead of her retirement.

The disagreement centres on the timing of her departure. Mashazi maintains she should remain in her role until the end of July—when she turns 65 and reaches the statutory retirement age.

“Kindly note that any action to the contrary or outside of the resolution of council would be viewed as irregular,” the letter stated.

Despite this, Mashazi insists she intends to serve her remaining two months and alleges that the move is financially motivated. According to her, the council is attempting to avoid paying her for the remainder of her five-year contract, of which two years remain.

The Public Service Act of South Africa stipulates a retirement age of 65. The Alberton Record has reached out to the City of Ekurhuleni for comment and will provide updates as soon as a response is received.
