On Wednesday, 10 residents of Zanele Mbeki Frail Care Centre in Dunnottar received delicious treats from Spur at Springs Mall.
This gesture was to show love to older persons in the facility who could not reunite with their families during the Easter weekend.
Zanele Mbeki Frail Care Centre is a 190-bed facility that provides essential care for elderly persons and persons with disabilities, ensuring their dignity is restored and supported in a safe environment.
Frail care is a specialised healthcare service provided to individuals who have lost the ability to manage their daily activities independently.
According to the social auxiliary worker, Selinah Nkomonde, some residents have been abandoned by their families and they do not visit them during such holidays.
“We took our residents to Spur since we are celebrating Easter month because we found that other elderly people could not visit their families.
“Spur Springs Mall brought our elderly to have lunch as part of their pensioner’s package.
“It was important for our residents to get this experience because they are forever in the institution and it is quite an adventure for them to leave or have a moment and explore outside the facility,” said Nkomonde.
She added, “We do not want our residents to feel like they are being kept inside, and we always encourage them to save their pocket monies so that they can take themselves out once in a while.
Some of these residents have never been visited by their families arriving at the centre.
“We appreciate the collaboration with Spur Springs Mall. This experience brings them to see that they are also important, and we are happy that they appreciated every moment,” said Nkomonde.
Zanele Mbeki Frail Care Centre was opened in 1975 as Tienie Vorster and later renamed in 2008 after the wife of former statesman, Thabo Mbeki.
