EU extends sanctions against Hamas, Palestinian Islamic JihadĀ

The European Union Council on Friday, prolonged the restrictive measures against Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) for another year.

The sanctions, extended until 20 January 2027, affect those who support, facilitate, or commission violent actions by the designated terrorist organizations.

Those identified are subject to an asset freeze, while EU citizens and companies are prohibited from making funds, arms and related materials available to them.

Additionally, all individuals are subject to a travel ban, which prevents them from entering or transiting through member states of the European Union.

The Council, following an annual review, has removed a deceased individual from the list, leaving a total of 11 individuals and three entities under the prohibitions.

The framework of restrictive measures was established on 19 January 2024 after the Hamas attacks of 7 October 2023 during the Jewish holiday of Simchat Torah.

Other designated terrorist organizations, including the Islamic State/ISIL/Da’esh and Al-Qaeda, have been under similar EU regulations since 20 September 2016.

The EU may target those who support ISIL/Da’esh and Al-Qaeda, materially or financially, as well as individuals and entities who participate in the planning, preparation, or enabling of their actions.

The sanctions currently apply to a total of 15 individuals and eight groups and will remain in place until 31 October 2026. The Council reviews the list at least every 12 months.
