Ex-assistant of Macky Sall’s camp: the RIS invites the prosecutor to come to his aid

The Rassemblement Islamique du Sénégal (RIS) Alwahda is mounted to the créneau to denounce with vigor the recent declarations of retired general Méïssa Sellé Ndiaye. In a communiqué made public this weekend, the Islamic organisation expressed “its profound indignation” at what it considers as an “irresponsible, stigmatising and attack on national unity”. According to the communiqué, the general, former aide de camp of the president Macky Sall, would have affirmed during a religious event in Koki that “l’islam confrérique était menacé par un islam importé”. It is a proposal which the RIS Alwahda considers “reductive and dangerous” and which, according to him, “dishonours an important part of the Muslim community”. “We have gone through between 2021 and 2024 one of the darkest periods of our recent democratic history”, recalled the RIS, which said to have “constantly alerted on the criminalization of dissident voices, arbitrary arrests, unfounded accusations of terrorism and the bloody repression of demonstrations”. In this context, the organization said it was “shocked” to see General Méïssa Sellé Ndiaye, described in the text as “the central arm of the security system of the time”, wanting to “present himself as the guardian of the Republic and the censor of religious beliefs”. The RIS Alwahda, which always speaks through a communiqué, considers that “the fight against extremism, religious or political, must be conducted with rigor and a sense of justice, without amalgamations or speeches of fear”. “Radicalism”, he declared, “is not the monopoly of a current or a tendency.
