EXCLUSIVE: Iorfa Reveals That Joining Galatasaray Led to His Exclusion from the Super Eagles Squad for the 1992 AFCON

Former Nigeria football player Dominic Iorfa stated that he was overlooked by the Super Eagles coaching staff for the 1992 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Senegal due to his transfer to Galatasaray. After spending only one season (1990-1991) at Queens Park Rangers, Iorfa moved to the Turkish club Galatasaray in 1993 but made just seven appearances, scoring two goals. He left Galatasaray in 1992 to join Peterborough United, where he played 60 matches and scored nine goals before leaving in 1994. This information was shared in an exclusive interview with Completesports. During the public launch of Dr. Mumini Alao’s autobiography at the University of Lagos on Sunday, the former striker for BCC Lions, Abiola Babes, and Ranchers Bees mentioned that the prevailing view at the time was that the Turkish league lacked quality. The 56-year-old, who represented the Super Eagles from 1989 to 1995 and made four appearances, expressed, “I can say I never had the chance to leave my mark on the Super Eagles due to the numerous players present.” “I recall a time when I moved to Turkey and joined Galatasaray in 1991. At that point, I was removed from the national team because people questioned why I would be playing in Turkey, as the Turkish league was considered to be quite poor.” As a result of my transfer to Galatasaray, I was excluded from the Super Eagles team for the 1992 AFCON. Galatasaray has become a hub for prominent Nigerian stars. Galatasaray today is vastly different from what it was over 30 years ago, as the club has successfully attracted top talent from around the globe, including players from Nigeria. Notable Nigerian footballers who have worn the iconic Galatasaray jersey include Henry Onyekuru, Jesse Sikidika, Valentine Ozornwafor, and now Victor Osimhen. Following a standout performance during his loan last season, Osimhen has officially signed with Galatasaray on a permanent basis from Napoli for a record fee of €75 million. Additionally, Souness has stated that Galatasaray is the ideal environment for Osimhen. Iorfa supports Osimhen’s transfer to Galatasaray. Iorfa, who has played for the Super Eagles in the 1995 FIFA Confederations Cup and the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, expressed support for Osimhen’s transfer to Galatasaray. He remarked, “In football, your next destination often depends on your luck.”
