UN experts expressed serious worries today regarding the immediate protection requirements and the harsh living conditions faced by displaced civilians in the mineral-rich eastern region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Escalating conflicts between the M23 armed group, which is backed by Rwanda, and the military forces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC)—aided by allied militias and mercenaries—have led to the displacement of over 700,000 individuals. The United Nations (UN) experts urge immediate humanitarian assistance and a political resolution to ensure the safety of civilians in the DRC.
