FAAN to close Lagos Airport Terminal 1 for 22-month renovation

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, has announced that Terminal 1 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, MMIA, Lagos, will be closed from March 2026 to enable a comprehensive overhaul of the facility.

FAAN said the shutdown, expected to last approximately 22 months, is to facilitate major rehabilitation and expansion works aimed at modernising the ageing terminal and significantly improving its passenger handling capacity.

To reduce disruption to international flight operations during the renovation period, the authority disclosed that it has built a temporary international departure terminal covering about 8,000 square metres.

The facility, which is close to completion, is expected to serve between five and six international airlines at the initial stage.

International passengers have been advised to plan ahead and arrive at the airport earlier than usual, as airlines will progressively move their operations to the temporary terminal and additional time may be required for check-in and security screening.

FAAN also assured that international arrivals, as well as cargo operations, will continue from other designated airport facilities, ensuring uninterrupted services throughout the duration of the project.

The upgrade will also include the construction of a skywalk linking Terminal 1 with the newer Terminal 2, improvements to surrounding road infrastructure, and an expansion of apron space to accommodate wide-body aircraft.
