The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, on Tuesday visited the site of the collapsed Ugo West Hotel in Jikwoyi, Abuja, and ordered the immediate arrest of the building’s owner and contractor.
Wike, who arrived at the scene following reports of the incident, expressed displeasure over the development, describing the collapse as unacceptable and a result of negligence.
The hotel, which was still under construction before it gave way, reportedly trapped several persons, including workers on site. Emergency responders and residents were seen making efforts to rescue victims from the rubble.
Addressing officials at the scene, the minister directed security agencies to ensure that those responsible for the construction of the building are apprehended without delay.
He stressed that the FCT Administration would not tolerate substandard construction practices, warning developers and contractors to strictly adhere to building regulations.
Wike also assured that a thorough investigation would be conducted to determine the immediate and remote causes of the collapse, adding that anyone found culpable would face the full weight of the law.
