Bruno Fernandes has thrown his full support behind Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim following the club’s landmark 2-1 victory over Liverpool at Anfield, their first in nearly a decade.

The win also marked Amorim’s first time securing back-to-back Premier League wins since taking charge at Old Trafford.

Amorim finally breaks back-to-back win curse

Since Amorim’s appointment in November 2024, his reign has been marked by inconsistency and heavy criticism.

Despite significant summer spending, bringing in Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha, United managed just two wins in their opening six league fixtures this season.

Before the Liverpool clash, Amorim had never managed consecutive league wins as United boss.

That streak ended at Anfield, following their 2-0 victory over Sunderland before the international break, a result that could signal a new dawn for the Red Devils.

Fernandes defends the manager’s tactics

Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 setup has faced intense criticism from pundits who argue the squad is ill-suited to his philosophy.

However, Fernandes dismissed such claims after Sunday’s match, insisting the system is not the problem.

“Our shape always gives teams issues,” the Portuguese midfielder told Sky Sports. “It’s ungrateful to talk about shape only when we lose.

“We always believe in the system, whether we win or lose. The key is executing in the right moments, we had to suffer in this game, but belief in our preparation made the difference.”

Call for consistency

Fernandes cautioned that United’s new form will mean little without consistency. “It doesn’t mean anything if we don’t win next week,” he added.

“The demands of this club are very high. We just have to keep winning and focus on each game ahead.”

Liverpool’s form dips under Slot

For Liverpool, the defeat deepens their current slump. Arne Slot’s side, the Premier League’s biggest spenders this summer, having splashed out on Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak, have now lost four consecutive matches across all competitions.

After starting the season with seven straight wins across all competitions, the Reds’ form has unraveled since their 2-1 loss to Crystal Palace, followed by defeats to Galatasaray, Chelsea, and now United.

They drop to fourth in the table, four points behind leaders Arsenal.
