Phrank Shaibu, the Special Assistant on Public Communication to Atiku Abubakar, has urged the federal government to carefully evaluate its relationship with France. According to DAILY POST, France is currently facing a diplomatic crisis in Africa, especially in West Africa, where it has long held significant influence over its former colonies. In a statement released on Thursday, Shaibu emphasized the importance of approaching the relationship with France with caution, ensuring Nigeria’s sovereignty, dignity, and leadership in Africa are maintained. He remarked, “While the reasons for this new partnership are uncertain, it is evident that France’s interest in Nigeria is not selfless.” It is based on self-preservation and a urgent effort to retain influence in a region that has become more hostile to its actions. “The stakes are significant for Nigeria.” Any partnership with France should be examined in light of national interests and historical lessons. Phrank emphasized that President Bola Tinubu’s administration needs to be cautious, stating that Nigeria should not be used as a means for France to regain strength in West Africa, nor should it become submissive in a relationship that has historically involved exploitation. He remarked, “Our engagement with France should be handled carefully, with a strong dedication to Nigeria’s sovereignty, dignity, and leadership in Africa. The critical issue is not just the direction of this alliance, but whether the potential costs for Nigeria are justified.” Only time will reveal whether this partnership will benefit Nigeria or turn the country into another pawn in France’s ongoing pursuit of power in Africa.
