The Federal Ministry of Livestock Development has intensified efforts to address a viral disease affecting small ruminants, as part of moves to improve livestock health and productivity in the country.
The initiative was discussed at a two day technical meeting held in Abuja on March 17, 2026, where stakeholders reviewed strategies to manage Peste des Petits Ruminants, PPR, a disease known to affect sheep and goats.
According to a statement shared on the ministryās official handle, the meeting brought together experts to assess the burden of the disease and explore data driven solutions.
Speaking at the session, the Chief Veterinary Officer of Nigeria, Samuel Anzaku, said the exercise is aimed at improving planning and response to livestock diseases.
āThis meeting provides an opportunity to evaluate the burden of animal diseases in Nigeria. By establishing reliable databases, we can guide targeted interventions and inform government planning,ā he said.
Anzaku added that the outcome of the assessment would support efforts to address PPR and other livestock diseases across the country.
Also speaking, the Director of Veterinary Medicine and National Focal Person for PPR, Patience Tomoh, highlighted the need for accurate data on livestock losses and disease impact.
She noted that the disease continues to affect rural livelihoods, food supply, and livestock trade.
āPPR has significant effects on smallholder livelihoods, food security, and livestock trade,ā she said.
A technical expert with Lancaster University, Gemma Chaters, said ongoing research is focused on measuring the full impact of the disease on Nigeriaās livestock sector.
āUnderstanding the full impact of PPR on livelihoods and the economy is essential. The meeting will provide the data needed for evidence-based control programs and to prioritise areas with the highest disease burden,ā she stated.
