Financial support for Senegal: the IMF opens up to discussion and sets its conditions

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) announced that it was working in close collaboration with Senegal to correct inaccuracies in the declaration of the public debt, inherited from the former government, according to the magazine ConfidentielDakar, read by DakarActu. This correction is an indispensable prerequisite to any discussion on a possible financial assistance programme. A recent analysis of the country’s public finances indeed revealed that the main indicators, notably the level of debt and deficit, had been significantly underestimated. Rather, the institution aims to accompany the government in its efforts to restore transparency and ensure the sustainability of public debt.
