Fire razes two markets in Yobe

Two separate fire incidents in Bade and Karasuwa local government areas of Yobe State have destroyed property worth millions of naira.

The Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), in a post on its official Facebook page, said the first inferno occurred around 9:20 pm on March 4, 2026, at Kara Market, located opposite the Federal University Gashua.

“The blaze consumed large quantities of animal feed and firewood, reducing traders’ inventories to ashes within hours.

“While no fatalities have been reported, the economic shockwaves are deeply felt as many families depend solely on these market activities for survival”, SEMA posted.

In a separate incident, the agency disclosed that fire swept through the Karasuwa Garun Guna cyclic market and the nearby Mattafari village at approximately 3:00 pm on March 5.

“The fire has completely destroyed three shops and 12 local stalls, with at least 61 individuals directly losing their primary sources of income.

“The State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) assessment teams already deployed to both locations, assess and recommend immediate, medium and long term solutions”, it said.

SEMA lamented the incessant fire outbreaks across the state, which often catch residents off guard, resulting in the destruction of both commercial and residential structures and compounding the trauma for already vulnerable households.
