A Federal Fire Service officer attached to the Trade Fair Complex, Lagos, lost his life on Wednesday after a traffic incident along the Trade Fair–inward Abule-Ado service lane.
LASTMA spokesperson, Adebayo Taofiq, said preliminary findings indicated that a commercial motorcyclist, who was riding against traffic at high speed, struck the firefighter as he attempted to cross the expressway.
The collision triggered confusion on the busy lane, during which a Shacman truck with registration number JJJ 919 YK failed to apply brake in time and fatally crushed the officer.
LASTMA personnel quickly cordoned off the area and notified the Onireke Police Division, which has opened a formal investigation into the incident.
Both the motorcyclist and the truck driver reportedly escaped the scene before law enforcement arrived.
The firefighter’s remains were later recovered by his colleagues and transported from the Trade Fair Complex in an official ambulance.
Expressing his condolences, LASTMA General Manager, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, sympathised with the family of the deceased and prayed for strength as they mourn.
He also pledged the agency’s support to the family during the difficult period.
Bakare-Oki condemned the recurring problem of motorists driving against traffic in Lagos, stressing that such unlawful behaviour continues to result in avoidable loss of lives.
He urged all road users to obey directional signs and adhere strictly to approved speed limits, describing compliance with traffic laws as a civic duty essential to safeguarding lives.
LASTMA affirmed its commitment to enhancing road safety, enforcing traffic regulations, and promoting a culture of responsible driving across Lagos State.
